The Healing Power of Honey

Honey has been used since ancient times as a medicine. However, it wasn’t until the late 19th century that researchers discovered that honey has natural antibacterial qualities and an anti-inflammatory power to ease pain and swelling.

Not all honeys are created equal

Not all honey is the same. The antibacterial quality of honey depends on the type of honey as well as when and how it’s harvested. Some honeys may be 100 times more potent than others.

Hydrogen peroxide is what gives most honey its antibiotic quality. But Manuka honey, made by bees that pollinate our native New Zealand manuka bush, contains additional antibacterial qualities, making it more powerful.

High MG

The major antibacterial component in honey is methylglyoxal (MG). The higher the concentration of MG, the stronger the antibiotic effect.

This compound (MG) is found in most types of honey, but usually only in small quantities. Manuka honey, however, is high in MG due to a compound found in high concentration in the nectar of manuka flowers. Manuka honey contains dihydroxyacetone. This compound converts into MG during the honey production process, giving manuka honey greater antibacterial properties.

antibacterial qualitiesUnique Manuka Factor

Manuka honey has a rating called UMF or Unique Manuka Factor. The UMF rating reflects the concentration of MG in the honey. To be high enough to be regarded as therapeutic, manuka honey needs a minimum rating of 10 UMF. Honey at or above that level is sold as “UMF Manuka Honey” or “Active Manuka Honey.”

Using manuka honey’s antibacterial magic

The main medical use for manuka honey is on top of a wound. It is often used for treating minor wounds and burns as it fights infection and boosts healing.

Another great benefit of manuka honey is that, unlike antibiotics, it doesn’t appear to lead to resistant bacteria: the “superbugs” that develop after repeated exposure to common antibiotics.

To find manuka honey with a UMF rating of 20+ come and find us at an Auckland market or you can buy it online. You can be 100% sure that that the raw honey you’re buying from us is pure manuka honey: no additives, no dodgy harvesting techniques.

It can’t bee bettered.

My last visit to NZ in December 2018, I bought total 6 bottles of 250gm & 500gm bk to Malaysia. But so sad to say that I can only managed to bring bk 4 bottles because my baggage was over loaded. So hv to leave the balance at my son’s house for him to bring bk later.
Formerly for the past years I used to buy them fr pharmacies or supermarkets. It was only last year tht I got to know tis brand fr your Corner @ Sylver Park in Auckland. Now that I hv found tht your honey is much better than other brands. In future will only look for your brand.
