The Power of Manuka Honey

Covid-19 will change the world as we know it. Not just over the short term as we ‘break the chain’ but also over the longer term as many of us reassess the way we live our lives.

And during this time of transition and stress, it is more important than ever that we keep an eye on our health, and so we’re here to talk about what you can do to boost your immune system.

Good immune health is vital if we’re to fight of the cold or flu bugs we’re bombarded with each season, let alone any more sinister viruses.

Get an immune boost

Manuka Honey has shown to provide support for the body’s respiratory and immune system, regardless of whether you’re fighting off the common cold, influenza or even nastier germs.

We know manuka honey contains more methylgloxal, the compound responsible for its antibacterial activity, and we also know the higher the concentration of MG, the stronger the antibiotic effect. But manuka honey also has antimicrobial and antioxidant properties, and some research has suggested it may also have antiviral effects that could help protect you from colds or flu, and possibly other viruses. Manuka honey is also loaded with both enzymes and minerals.

Manuka energy booster

Being full of sweetness, manuka honey also gives you a buzz when you’re feeling tired. Its high nutrient density makes it a great natural energy booster.

Manuka 20+MGO Manuka Power

Not all Manuka honey is created equal and MGO levels can vary greatly. Manuka honey should therefore be labeled with the actual MG test results (in mg/kg). Every jar of manuka honey we sell is tested and certified for natural MGO content. The MGO number tells you how much MGO is in your jar of honey – and the more MGO the more active you manuks honey is – simple.

Reaping the Manuka honey benefits

Whether it’s by the spoonful or stirred into a hot drink or porridge, manuka honey can be very helpful for your wellbeing and can boost your immune system.

According to the many experts out there, to get the most immune boosting benefits from manuka honey, you should take a dose of about 1 to 2 tablespoons a day. The easiest way to do this is to eat a spoonful straight from the jar. Manuka honey is typically thicker in consistency, darker in colour, and has a more earthy flavour than other honeys, so if spoons of honey are a bit much for you, you could incorporate it into your breakfast meal by:

  • Spreading it on a slice of wholemeal or granary toast
  • Adding it to your yoghurt or porridge
  • Spooning it into a herbal tea for added sweetness.
  • Working it into a smoothie

Manuka immune booster elixir

We’ve also got an easy recipe to really boost your immune system. Made with pure raw manuka honey, raw apple cider vinegar, fresh ginger, lemon juice, and propolis extract, this manuka honey vinegar elixir will kickstart your defences and is a great way to start your day. It’s delicious, refreshing, and the manuka honey adds a nice sweetness.

You can drink this daily to keep yourself well or take it when you’re sick for a speedier recovery.

  • 2 cups water
  • 2.5 cm piece of fresh ginger thinly sliced
  • 1-2 tbsp manuka honey
  • 1-2 tbsp raw apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
  • 4 drops honey proplis extract – optional

  1. Add the ginger to two cups of water and boil for about 10-15 minutes. Turn off the heat and let cool to almost room temperature. It can still be warm, but you don’t want it to be too hot or else it will kill off some of the benefits of the honey.
  2. Strain the ginger from your ginger tea.
  3. Put 1-2 tablespoons of manuka honey into a large cup or mug.
  4. Add the vinegar, lemon juice, and propolis.
  5. Once the ginger tea has cooled sufficiently, add to the mug and stir well to combine until the honey has dissolved.
  6. Drink and enjoy!

If you’d like to make a larger batch, you can double the recipe and store it in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.
